Television or Telomeres?
Which choice are you most likely to make: you have had a stressful day, the drive home was challenging to your spiritual presence and your desire to be light unto the world. When you finally get home you either grab a glass of grape derived “medicine” and plop down in front of the news or take a seat on your meditation cushion and re-claim your mindfulness-which one is you? Opting for meditation over marinating in stress hormones may help you to live longer and stronger. This spiritual intervention can change your mind and your DNA.
The “fountain of youth” can flow when you are under the influence of mindfulness and a daily dose of OM can bring power to your practice and to your telomeres. Telomeres are sequences of DNA at the end of chromosomes and are considered an index of cell age-acting like a clock in the lifespan of a cell. The shorter these DNA “buffers” become the shorter the life expectancy of our cells and the likelihood of a shorter life for you and I. Now rather than throwing in the towel and bellying up to a TV dinner in front of more bad evening news-take heart, take a “pranayamic” based breath and take a seat to turn the fate of your DNA and life in the direction of long and strong!
The first step to telomere recovery is to open mind and remove your BUT. Look for any limiting beliefs you may have about your ability to be more proactive in managing your level of stress thru a daily commitment to meditation-eg. BUT I am too busy, BUT I am too overwhelmed, BUT I am too…whatever. You can choose to be positive stress management ninja by taking the “one seat” and moving from being a mess to feeling blessed. Need more inspiration, motivation…greater leverage? Less disease, more happiness, longer life, beautiful skin, awesome heart health, greater passion, energy, Einsteinian mind and creativity, fulfillment and every night epic sleep just to name a few “side effects”
How does a mindfulness practice effect telomeres and support a longer and more vital path in life? Research scientists from UC Davis saw that study participants who performed daily meditation had higher telomerase activity than non meditators. Telomerase is an enzyme that repairs, strengthens and lengthens telomeres. You will delight in knowing that the simple and powerful practice of meditation helps to bring greater resilience, purpose and meaning into life. Scientist believe that it is these “feelings” that help to buffer telomeres from the detrimental effects of stress to our DNA.
Take a breathe and remember who you really are. Let go of the drama and embrace your spiritual based DNA. Choose to step up and sit down and allow the current of love that is always present to hold you in peace, power and presence. Live light and shine bright!
